Easter Sermons for Children

In this sermon, have the entire congregation, one by one share the Easter Message "Christ is Risen."  Make a baton and write on it the traditions that the church has passed on.  This is to illustrate to the children the transmission of the Easter message for all of these years.
Sermon One: Passing the Baton in the Great Relay Race
   What Christian Feast Day is more important? Christmas or Easter?  They are both very important but Easter is the most important Christian day of the Christian year.  Why?  If Jesus had not come back alive, we would not celebrate Christmas and we would not even exist as a church
  When the resurrection of Christ happened, the friends of Jesus who saw him alive again after his death began to share the story.  And now that story has been share for about 2000 years.  If the church is about 2000 years old, that means that there has been about 100 generations using 20 years as the average length of a generation.  So how has the message of the life, the death and resurrection Jesus been remembered for 2000 years?  By one parent sharing the message with their children and their children share the message with their own children. 
  If we have about 100 people here let us see how long it takes to share the message. One by one, let’s share the message, one time for each generation.  Let’s see how long it takes to say Christ is Risen around this entire gathering.  Okay start.
   But the church has not just passed on spoken message.  We have passed it on in things that we can see and touch and feel.  And so I have made a baton for a relay race and I’ve written some things on the Baton.  The Bible.  The Old Testament Stories.  The New Testament Stories.  Creeds. Holy Spirit. Water of Baptism. Oil of Baptism and Confirmation.  Fire of Baptism.  Bread and Wine of Eucharist.  Prayers for the Sick.  Bishops, Priests, Deacons and Lay Persons.  Marriage Rings.
  These are things of the church that have been shared for 100 generations.  These things have been passed on from family to family for 2000 years.  And that is why we are here today, because someone told us the message about Jesus Christ and because the church has passed on the various things that have helped us to remember that Jesus rose again.  And because the Holy Spirit is inside us giving us the hope that we are going to live beyond our deaths.  And why do we believe that we will live beyond our deaths?  Because Jesus Christ lived beyond his death; he did it to show us what will happen to us after we die.  We will live beyond our death and we will live with God.  That is why this day is such a happy day and it is why we shout: Alleluia!  Christ is Risen!  The Lord is risen indeed.  Alleluia!  Amen. 

Sermon

Children do you know what imagination is?  Do you ever use your imagination?  Do you

think that imagination was used to make Disney movies?  And to write books?  And to

invent things?
  So today, I am going to ask you to join me in using our imaginations.  With our imaginations we can do magical things.  Did our first president George Washington drive a Cadillac?  No, he didn’t, but with our imagination we can pretend that he did.  And wouldn’t it be kind of funny to thing about George Washington driving a car among all of the other horseback riders and people in carriages pulled by horses?  We can do this with our imagination.
   I would like for us to imagine Jesus living in a home in Jerusalem.  But his home has also become his office.  It is his office and the sign on the door says, “Welcome to Jesus Ministries.”
  And when go into the office of Jesus, we see him sitting at a desk and there are lots of desks and with phones on each desk.  Jesus is talking on the phone.  He finishes one phone call and he has to take another phone call.  And his disciples are also taking phone calls.  And there are so many calls, they have to bring in people to answer the phone in the evening and throughout the night because phone calls are coming in from people who live around the world.
  And the disciples are getting worried.  They go to Jesus when he has a break and they say, “Jesus, there are too many people calling.  People are asking for all kinds of things.  A little girl needs some medicine.  And  a family does not have enough food, but they live too far away.  We cannot get the food to them.  And there is a sick man who wants to be healed, but he lives so far away.”
  Jesus said, “Yes, we have thousands and thousands of requests for help, but I am located here in Jerusalem.  I can only be here in one place at one time.”  One of the disciples said to Jesus, “How can we clone you Jesus?  Can we make a million copies of you?  And then one of your clones could be in places all over the world.  If we could clone millions of copies of you, you could be everywhere and then lots more people could get the help which they need.  Jesus what are you going to do about all of the problems of people in this world when you only live in Jerusalem?”
  Jesus said, “Well, I’ve got a plan.”
 So you know what happened?  Jesus went out on the street and he began to heal and preach good news.  He told the Romans citizens and the Jews they had to love for one another.  He told them that God was near to them and God was coming to them.  And you know what happened?  Jesus made the Romans and the religious people angry.  “What do you mean Jesus, that God’s kingdom is coming?  This is the Caesar’s kingdom or this is the kingdom of King David where someone great like David will come back and be a powerful king.”  So the people got so angry at Jesus for preaching about God’s kingdom.  They were worried that God’s kingdom would be a threat to the kingdom of the Emperor Caesar.  They were worried that this kingdom of God would not be another great military king like King David.
  So do you know what they did to Jesus?  They did not like his message about the kingdom of God’s love, so they put him to death on the cross.  And they thought that this was the end of Jesus.  They thought that Jesus would be gone forever.
  But you know what?  When the friends of Jesus went to the grave and tomb of Jesus, they found it empty.  And you know suddenly people saw Jesus popping up all over.  People suddenly saw him in Jerusalem.  And some saw him on the Emmaus road and on the same day some saw him way up north in Galilee, quite a distance from Jerusalem.
  And the disciples got together and they said, “This Jesus is really clever and he has found the perfect solution to the problem of so many people needing the help of Jesus.  When Jesus died, he has come back and he has had the life that was inside of his body cloned to go into the lives of us and many people.
  And since the insides of Jesus have been cloned and put inside the lives of millions and millions of people, the work of Jesus can get done all around the world.  Jesus is no longer limited to being in just one body in Jerusalem; now Jesus can be the risen Christ in the lives of people everywhere.
  And you know what?  The insides of Jesus have been cloned and is inside us too.  I see it in you.  I look at Wes, and Jackson and Cole and I see Christ is risen and in them.  I look in your eyes and I can see the risen Christ in you and I know that your hands perform the works of kindness and love that allows Christ to do so much in this world now that he is not just limited to the one body of Jesus in his Jerusalem office.
  I look at you and I know that Christ is alive; I know that Christ has risen from the death and I know that the life that was inside of Jesus, his Spirit, has become cloned and is in you and me.
  Isn’t that wonderful?  To know that Jesus is not limited to just one time or place but that the risen Christ can now be everywhere.
  Let me hear you say, “Alleluia.”  Can’t hear you.  Christ is Risen!  Can you say that?  Now say, “Christ is risen, in me!”  Can you say, “Christ is risen in you!”  Now can you say?  I am a Christ-clone.  Because the Spirit of Christ is alive and well in me.  Amen.

Father Phil:  Boys and girls, I received a phone call from Hairy the Profit and he was very worried and anxious.  He said that he wanted to see me right away.  He said it was important.  Hairy are you around?  Where are you?

Hairy: Hello boys and girl.  Have you seen the Padre?  Is he sleeping again?  Where is the Padre?

Father Phil:  Hairy, I’m right here.  And of course, I’m not sleeping; it’s Easter Sunday.  Though I will be preaching later and that might help some get some sleep.  You look terrible Hairy, what’s wrong?  And by the way is your name Harry, short for Harold?

Hairy:  No, my name is Hairy, H-A-I-R-Y.

Father Phil: Could of guessed that from the amount of hair on your body.  But what’s the matter why are you worried?

Hairy:  I have special delivery that needs to arrive for Easter Day and if it doesn’t come, we won’t be able to start Easter.

Fr. Phil:  That’s terrible; what is so important that would delay Easter.

Hairy: You will soon know; but if it doesn’t show up.  I’ll be leaving town in embarrassment.

Fr. Phil:  Well, Hairy, it must be very serious.

Hairy: It is and I do not want to delay Easter.

Delivery Person:  Excuse me, is there a Hairy Profit here?  I have a package for him from the Postal Service.

Hairy:  I’m Hairy Profit.  Whew! You saved the day.  Please give the package to Father Phil.

Delivery Person:  Let me verify your identity, Do you really spell your name, H-A-I-R-Y  P-R-O-F-I-T?

Hairy: Yes, do you have a problem with that?

Delivery Person:  No, your mom and dad sure got the name right.

Hairy: Father Phil, hurry and open the Package.  What’s in there?

Father Phil: Okay, there is a letter in here and the letter says, “Dear Hairy, please get a haircut.  Love, Mom.  Is that what you were expecting?  How was that letter holding up Easter?  If you get a haircut can we start Easter?

Hairy: No that was not what I was expecting.  I am so disappointed.  That was not what I needed to start Easter.  I am so embarrassed.

Delivery Person:  Hello, there is a special delivery for Hairy Profit from UPS.  Is there a Hairy Profit here.

Hairy:  I’m here.  Hurry up.  Maybe this is what I was expecting.  Please come and give that package to Father Phil.  Father Phil open it up and tell me what it is.

Fr. Phil:  Okay be patient.  And here it is.  It is a special delivery from before the season of Lent.  Do you know what it is?  It is the Word Alleluia.  And it has arrived just in time for the Easter.

Hairy:  Yes, now we can begin Easter because Alleluia has returned just in time for Easter.  Alleluia.  Alleluia.  Alleluia.  Aren’t you happy that we can say Alleluia again?

Fr. Phil:  Yes, we are and thank you Hairy for getting Alleluia to us on time, and as a friend could I say something to you?

Hairy:  I guess so.

Fr. Phil:  Get a haircut.  And Good bye

Miss Debbie (in front of the puppet theatre)

There is a tomb with a round stone on it hanging from the curtain at the back of the theatre

Miss Debbie:  Boys and girls let us visit the tomb of Jesus.  His friend Nicodemus gave this tomb so that Jesus could be buried there.  It was so sad for the friends of Jesus when he died.  They loved him.  He was a special friend and teacher.  Look there’s someone at the tomb now.

Soldier: (pacing back and forth) Stop young lady.  You cannot go near the tomb.  The chief priests told me to guard the tomb.

Miss Debbie: Well, why are you guarding the tomb?

Soldier: Well, I’m just doing my job.  Those chief priests were jealous of this man Jesus and they think that someone might come and steal his body.  That’s strange thinking, but I’m just doing my job.  Just run along.  You can’t be hanging around here.
(Miss Debbie moves to the side)

(Multiple Flashing camera lights in the puppet theatre)

Soldier: Oh my!  I’m blinded!  I can’t see what has happened.  I think that I’m going to faint. Oooooooooooooh!
(Soldier falls off scene)
The stone has been taken off the tomb a grave cloth hangs on the opening of the tomb


Miss Debbie: Children did you see some flashing lights?  I wonder what is happening at the tomb.  Maybe I should go back and check it out.  Do you think the soldier is still there?  Maybe I can sneak back and take a peek.  Will you take a peek with me?

(Mary Magdalene and Salome are now coming to the tomb before they look at the tomb Mary Magdalene says)

Mary Magdalene:  Salome, we’ve got to get to the tomb of Jesus.  We collected so many more spices from our friends to help prepare his body.  He had to be buried so quickly, but now we have more spices.  But I’m worried Salome.


Salome: Mary, why are you worried?

Mary Magdalene:  There is a big stone that is on the entrance of the tomb.  It is too heavy for you and I to roll open.  Maybe there will be some one there to help us open the tomb.

Salome:  Mary, you don’t have to worry.  The stone is already rolled away.

Mary Magdalene:  Oh, no!  Something has happened?  Where’s the body of Jesus?  All I can see is his empty grave cloth.  Who stole his body?   This is terrible.  Why would someone steal the body of Jesus?

(Young Man sticks his head out of the tomb)

Mary Magdalene(seeing the young): Oh, you frightened me!  Did you do this?  Did you take the body of my friend Jesus?  Where did you take him?  Why did you do this?

Young Man: Calm down and don’t be afraid!  Your friend Jesus is not here.  He has been raised from the dead.  You can see his empty grave clothes.  Now I want you to go and tell the disciples and tell Peter that Jesus has risen from the dead.

Mary Magdalene:  Wow!  What does this mean?  When will I see Jesus again?  Let us go quickly and tell Peter.

(Peter shows himself in the left panel)

Peter: Mary Magdalene and Salome…slow down, why are you running?  What has happened?

Mary Magdalene:  We went to the tomb to put more spices on the grave clothes…but the tomb was already open and the grave clothes were empty.  And a young man or angel told us that Jesus had risen from the dead.  He told us to come and tell you.

Peter: Wow!  You know what this means don’t you?

Salome:  What does it mean?

Peter: It means that everything that Jesus told us is true.  He said that he would come back to life after three days.  This is so wonderful.  God did the most special thing ever on this day.  I can’t wait until we see Jesus.

(They disappeared in the left panel and reappear in the middle panel and Jesus pokes out from behind the curtain)

Jesus: Greetings my friends!  Peace be with you!

Peter:  Thank you Jesus for coming back to us.

Mary Magdalene:  We were so worried.

Jesus: Remember this day.  All you will be witnesses to tell everyone what happened.

Salome:  Now I know why Alleluia returns on Easter Day.

Miss Debbie: Alleluia!  Christ is Risen!  Can you say that?

Everyone: Alleluia!  Christ is Risen!

Miss Debbie: The Lord is Risen indeed.  Alleluia!  And now all of us are witnesses too of the resurrection of Christ.  Because Christ lives in us too.

Theme:

 Life after life

Bring pictures of the same person over the span of their lives. 
Does the person look the same when 15 as at the age of one?
Does the person at 50 look the same as at 20?
How do we know it is the same person?
The person has Self memories.  He or she knows that he or she is the same person at 5 as at 25.
The people who know the person for a period of time know that a person is the same person at 25 and at 30.
We have DNA and we have fingerprints which stay the same and so we can be identified as the same person.

The questions today:  Will we be able to recognize ourselves after we have died?  Will others be able to recognize us after we have died?

Answer: Yes, we will.  We change in our appearance as we grow and age in our lives.  And when we died we will also change in our appearance but we will continue to have an appearance on another level of living, heavenly living.  How do we know?

After Jesus died, he reappeared to life.  Living people saw Jesus again after he died.  The resurrection of Jesus is God announcement to us that we will be preserved after we die in a wonderful way.  This is why we can have hope in our lives because we know that we will always have a future.

Sermon Two:  The empty Easter Egg


  Let me tell you today about an Easter Egg hunt that took place on Easter Sunday in a church.  And the Sunday School teacher wanted to teach a lesson to the children on Easter Sunday.  So Mr. Jones during Sunday School on Easter Sunday, said to his class, “Today is Easter Sunday and so we want to do something special.  We are going to have an Easter Egg hunt.  I’ve have already hidden the eggs.  So let’s go outside and look.  And I want each of you to find only one egg.  And when everyone has found one egg, then we will come back to the classroom and each of us will open our egg in front of the entire class.  So the entire class of twelve children ran outside to look for the eggs in a place on the lawn where Mr. Jones had hidden the eggs.  One by one each child found an egg.  One child said, “I’ve found my egg.”  Another child said, “Please help me find my egg.”  And finally after about 10 minutes each child found an egg.  Mr. Jones rang a bell and said, “Come into the classroom.”  And so the children came back into the classroom each holding an egg.  Now these eggs were not real eggs, they were plastic hollow eggs so that there could be a hidden treat inside of the egg.
   When they were seated in the classroom, Mr. Jones said, “Now one by one we are going to open each egg to see what’s in the egg.  And let me tell you, there is a surprise in one of the eggs and whoever has the surprise will get something special.”
  One by one the eggs were opened.  Johnny said, “I have a dollar bill in mine…I bet I won the prize.”  Mary opened hers and she found some very nice chocolates so she said, “No, these are really the best chocolates, so I bet I won the prize.”  Jimmy opened his egg and he had a little Lego man so he said, “I think I got the best prize.”  Grace opened her egg and she had a cute little furry bunny rabbit and she said, “I won!”  Gloria opened her egg and found a silver dollar and she said, “Wow!  I hit the jackpot!”  Jeremy opened his egg and he found a lovely ring that fit his finger and it had a red jewel on it, so he said, “Surely this must be the best prize.”  Betsy then opened her egg and she found a cute little baby chick, and she was thrilled because she knew she had won.  Todd opened his egg and found a shiny whistle and he blew the whistle because he thought he had won.  Everyone who heard the loud noise, said, “Stop blowing the whistle, it hurts our ears.”  Joey opened his egg and he found a little race car…just what he wanted, and so he believed he was the winner.  Margaret opened her egg and she found a cute little teddy bear and she was happy.  Harry opened his Easter Egg and he found a porcelain little Dalmatian.  And he just loved those spotted dogs.  And then there was only one person and one egg left to open and it was Lucy’s egg.  Everyone said, “Hurry and open it let us see.”  But Lucy got very shy and so she hid her egg under desk so that no one could see her open it.  She looked down as she opened it and when she got it opened, her face turned red and said.  Everyone shouted, “What did you get Lucy?  Did you win?  What did you get?”  And Lucy looked up and said, “I lost…I did not get anything…my egg is empty.”  And the children laughed at her and said, “Mr. Jones really played a joke on you.”
  Then the children asked Mr. Jones, “Tell who won the best prize?”
 And Mr. Jones said, “Children, Lucy won the best prize and so she get this special prize, a new Bible.”  The children said, “Why did Lucy win?  Her egg was empty?”
  Mr. Jones said, “Today is Easter.  And when the women went to the tomb of Jesus what did they find?”  They found that the tomb was empty and because it was empty they were winners, because that meant that Jesus was still alive.
  And so Lucy’s egg was empty.  And she wins the prize on Easter to remind us that the empty tomb of Jesus means that Christ is alive and that he is still with us today. 
   So as winners today let us be happy about the empty tomb of Jesus.  Let us say, Alleluia, Christ is Risen.  The Lord is risen indeed.  Alleluia!

On the first day of the week, at early dawn, the women who had come with Jesus from Galilee came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in, they did not find the body. While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them. The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again." Then they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb, they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told this to the apostles. But these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; then he went home, amazed at what had happened.

Children’s Creed
We did not make ourselves, so we believe that God the Father is the maker of the world.
Since God is so great and we are so small,
We believe God came into our world and was born as Jesus, son of the Virgin Mary.
We need God’s help and we believe that God saved us by the life, death and
resurrection of Jesus Christ.
We believe that God is present with us now as the Holy Spirit.
We believe that we are baptized into God’s family the Church where everyone is
welcome.
We believe that Christ is kind and fair.

The Cross As Providence and As Mystical Experience

When we survey the New Testament and the history of the Christian Church, we might ask the question, "Is Christianity about the Cross of Jesus or about the Risen Christ?"

And the obvious answer is, "Both."

But Good Friday is the day of the Cross of Jesus Christ.  We venerate the cross on this day, because that is what the practice is in church tradition  and it is also what the New Testament writers did.

Paul wrote, "May I not boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world."

The Passion Gospel of John's Gospel is the account which boasts most profoundly about the Cross of Jesus Christ.  The Gospel of John is written and attains a particular climax in the cross of Jesus.

Early in John's Gospel, Jesus told Nicodemus: "And I, if I be lifted up will draw the entire world to me."

So the cross is presented as the elevator of Jesus into the afterlife of his resurrection?

Why did the writer of John's Gospel write the Passion story with so much boasting confidence?  

John's Gospel was the last Gospel written.  The writer had lived the history of the success of the Jesus Movement.  The Gospel writer knew that the crucifixion of Jesus did not end the memory of Jesus as it was intended by the Roman authorities in Palestine.  The cross of Jesus had to be re-visited because the Risen Christ did not go away.  The Risen Christ kept re-appearing as a significant Spirit Force in the lives of so many people that the church had to proclaim the Cross of Jesus as the exalted and necessary Providence of God.

Can you imagine a person on the gallows saying to the executioners, "Guys, I'm just letting you do this to me.  If I did not want to be executed by you, I could escape.  Go, ahead and take my life because you can only do my will by doing so?"

The future re-writes the significance of  past events.  The resurrection of Christ re-wrote the understanding of the crucifixion of Jesus.

As you and I gather to venerate the Cross of Jesus today on Good Friday what meaning can we take from this day?

First, no matter how bad the present or past has been, the future will change the ultimate meanings of what has happened.  This can seem like a rather blatant trivialization of the evil that is often inflicted upon people.  It seems cruel to be so confident while evil is happening.  "Oh, this is just terrible now, but some day this will all be re-written as having been absolutely necessary for the future."  It is true that the present is an absolute link between the past and the future.  Faith because of hope about the future, does not justify the current evil.  We should resist forcefully evil in the present with all of our strength.  And when we lose to suffering, pain and death, let us not lose without a fight.  But let us have hope that in our future afterlife that God is large enough to provide us meaning for our suffering and to let us know that our suffering has been beneficial for the life of others in our world.  Today, we bring the current crosses of our lives and world and we cry out in pain for the suffering which does not yet have redemptive meaning.  And we ask for strength to resist evil and pain with all our might.

Second, and finally, we ask that we might have the mystical experience of the Cross of Jesus that St. Paul and the early Christians had.  Paul said that he was crucified with Christ and as a result of this mystical experience, Christ lived in and through him.  Paul said that in such an identity with cross of Jesus Christ, the world was crucified to him.  That is to say, he had attained the power of self-control whereby he no longer let anything in his life become a controlling idol.  He was freed from the power of addicting desire; he had an experience of a Higher Power to attain self-control.

Today as we venerate the Cross, we present with honesty all of the pain and suffering of our lives and our world.  We present all of the evil that is inflicting this world.  And we scream that we can find no good reason for such evil.  But we also offer a deep sigh of hope that the future will provide us with redemptive meanings for what now seems such a triumph of chaos.

Today, we also venerate the Cross as a request for the mystical experience of the cross of Jesus to provide us with the Higher Power to attain the self-control to resist all that is unworthy.

Come today, let us boast in the cross of Jesus Christ.  Amen.

Two Chief Christian Values: Eucharist and Service

The liturgy tonight highlights the practice of Holy Eucharist by the church.  And it highlights that service is the value that Jesus promoted for the survival of the Jesus Movement.

Even though the Eucharist is related to the Passover Meal, it is quite different.  The Passover Meal occurs once a year.  The Eucharist was recommended for each gathering of Christians.  

The Eucharist developed some of the themes of the Passover Meal.  The early church proclaimed Christ as our Passover Lamb who would take away the sin of the world, but his actual death on the Cross was the event of him being the Last Passover sacrifice.

The lamb was no longer needed for a Christian Passover meal; the meaning of the body of Jesus was transferred onto the elements of bread and wine in a meal to become the gathering meal of Christian for the ages.

Why was Eucharist to be frequent and not just an annual meal?  It was a communal eating, a public eating together.  Why?  What can be determined when people eat together?  It can be verified that everyone has enough to eat.  The early Eucharist was done within context of an actual meal, where everyone ate actual food.  The Eucharistic words were added to an actual meal to reinforce that the people who ate together were a part of the family of Christ, and those who cared for one another.

The Eucharistic words of Paul in his letter to the Corinthian church are actually words of warning and discipline.  People who gathered to eat together began to trivialize the holy significance of eating together; they were in fact forgetting the purpose of their gathering.  So, St. Paul had to give them some discipline orders for how they were to regard the special meal of the bread and wine and their association and identity with the body of Christ.  In the words of discipline about the practice of Eucharist by the Corinthian church we can find the first written Eucharistic words of the New Testament.

From the actual practice of Holy Eucharist by the early churches the Gospel were written with the account of the Last Supper to show the derivation of the Eucharist from a Meal event in the week of the death of Jesus.  The early church confessed that the practice of Eucharist derived from a command, an institution by the word of Jesus.  We commemorate this institution tonight.

If the church survives by the command to continue to gather and celebrate the Eucharist of Christ, what other value is the secret to the success and survival of the church?

Service.  The value of service was demonstrated by Jesus in the washing of the feet of his disciples.  Jesus led by example, and he exemplified service.  He had the stature to be the boss and just give commands for others to serve him; but he led by serving.  And he told his followers to do likewise.  "Check your egos at the door or you will always live in contention and division."  Service is what the living death of sacrifice looks like.  St. Paul wrote, I urge you through the mercies of Christ to present yourselves as living sacrifice which is your spiritual service."

The foot-washing that we do tonight is embarrassing for us tonight because it is not a common practice of our culture; it was common to the culture of Jesus in a time of lots of walking in sandals creating dusty feet.  A good host would provide for the relief of tired and dusty feet.  The Maundy Thursday liturgy continues the foot-washing, not to recommend this as a modern practice, but to remind us that we present ourselves as living sacrifices to God and to each other when we serve each other.

Our parish, St. John's began with service, it has survived more than 60 years because of service, and it will only survive into the future through continued service.

Where is the future hope of our parish?  In the continued faithful practice of Eucharist and in the continue practice of service by the people of St. John the Divine.

This Maundy Thursday reminds us and calls us to Eucharist and to service tonight.  Amen.

Embrace the Passion Gospel Through St. Paul

  Once again, we've got our donkeys to church for Palm Sunday and Passion Sunday.  And we are faced with the contrast between the Palm Procession crowd who cried "Hosanna" to their king and the Passion Gospel crowd that screamed, "Crucify Him."  Were they the same crowd?  Probably not.

The Hosanna crowd were probably the country bumpkins from Galilee who made their Passover pilgrimage to Jerusalem and they wanted to make their hometown boy Jesus, the new king of Jerusalem.

But Jerusalem was controlled by the Roman authorities.  The Romans were invested in Jerusalem.  They in fact provided most of the jobs in Jerusalem.  They were building roads, bridges and aqueducts and they were actually building the temple complex as part of their public works program.  The Jewish religious leaders had to negotiate a place for their religious communities with the Roman authorities.  They could not have country prophets bringing their mobs and threaten the tenuous relationship with the Roman authorities.

So, one can understand how easy it was for the religious authority to gather a crowd of people in Jerusalem to help to get rid of Jesus who might threaten to bring down the wrath of the Roman soldiers and threaten the public work projects in Jerusalem which provided most of the jobs.

The two crowds can be explained with political and economic reasons.

But I am more interested in how the Passion Gospel functions in the life of the church.  We know it functions in our annual liturgical calendar.  The church calendar is a annual cycle of teaching curriculum tied to the events in the life of Jesus.  The church has divided the life of Jesus up into an annual cycle to teach and inculcate the values of Jesus to us and to the new people who are invited to our faith community.

But the Passion Gospels have often been dreadfully misused in church history.  Sometimes after the recitation of the Passion Gospel, enraged Christians used the Passion account to justify the persecution and harming of Jewish minority groups.  This is part of the shameful history of the use of the Passion Gospel.

When the Passion Gospels came to their last editions, the churches had increasingly become Gentile communities separated from the synagogues.  So in the presentation of the death of Jesus, the Passion texts seem to put as much blame upon the Jewish religious authorities and they seem to try to absolve Pilate and Herod as those who mere pawns of the Jewish religious authorities.  The fact is that the Romans were the ones in power for the awful spectacle of the practice of crucifixion.  It is most unfortunate that the Passion accounts have been used for anti-Semitic behaviors in the history of the church.

The reason it is so sad, is that the church has lost the mystical meaning of the Passion Gospels which was surely intended in the early church.

What is the mystical meaning of the Passion Gospels?  

St. Paul wrote before the Gospel were written.  He and others had a practice of the mystical transformation of their lives through an experience of identity with the Risen Christ.  The Risen Christ, re-lived a divine life within Paul.  Paul said that he was crucified with Christ and that he no longer lived, but Christ lived within him.  He said, he determined to know nothing except Christ, and him crucified.  He said that cross of Christ was a stumbling-block to the Jews and foolishness to the Greek and Hellenistic Roman community.  But the cross was the power of God to those who believed.  No Messiah for the Jews would be found on a cross; that was a stumbling block.  No king would be crucified; that was foolishness to the Greek-trained mind.

The early church wrote the Gospels as manuals of mysticism for people to identify with Christ; to know that Christ was mystically or spiritual born in each person and who lived and ministered within in each person.  Each person was to know an identity with Christ in his life, death and resurrection.  And all of this was coded in the Gospel narrative.

The death of the good and perfect Son of God, Jesus was regarded to be a good energy.  Each Christian in identity with the death energy of Jesus on the cross was given power, a higher power to die to what is unworthy in one's life because of selfish ego states.  In Christ, one could die to oneself, and allow the higher power of the Christ nature to be born within oneself.

The Passion Gospel readings are cryptic presentations of the mystical experience of Paul and others in identity with Christ.  Do you see how much the church has lost the mystical aspect of the Passion?  We reduced it mere historical events that we try to reproduce in Passion plays.  We tried to merely externalize the mystical event and in so doing we have lost contact with the mystical event.  We have thrown the baby out with the bath water.

Today we need the mystical power of the death of Christ to help us die to all that is unworthy in this life, to our addictive repetitions and to our selfish behaviors.

It much easier for us to just keep the Passion of Christ on a liturgical calendar as an attempt to act out an historical event.  We are happy to remain rubberneckers to this cruel event rather than take the invitation of St. Paul to be united in identity with Christ in his death and resurrection.

The event of baptism is a ritual that signifies this continual reality of dying and rising with Christ as the continuous mystical transformation of our lives.

Today on Passion Sunday, you and I are invited to the power of the death of Christ, as an experience of the mystical transformation of our lives.

Let us not be rubbernecker to the Passion event today; let us embrace a full identity with Christ in his death as a way to end that which is unworthy within us.  Amen.

The day of two crowds

One crowd of the followers of Jesus who came to Jerusalem perhaps from Galilee and the countryside wanted to make him the king of Jerusalem.

The people in Jerusalem who received most of their jobs by being employed in the building projects of the Roman government, were worried about the people who wanted to make Jesus a king.  The people in Jerusalem were worried about the Roman soldiers punishing them because of the popularity of Jesus.

During the day time the crowd with Jesus had their parade.  They put him on a donkey and celebrated him as their king.

At night Jesus was taken by the authorities and arrested and put on trial.  The crowd who went to the trial were a different crowd.  And they wanted to get rid of Jesus and so they told the Roman governor that Jesus was trying to be a rival king to Caesar, the Emperor in Rome.

The Roman government put people on a Cross to die in public so all people would be reminded not to rebel against the Roman government.

Jesus really did not want to be a rival king to the Caesar, he wanted to become a “king of hearts.”  He wanted to be someone who ruled the thoughts and feelings of all people with love and kindness.

Let us wave palm branches today to remind ourselves that Jesus is the king of our hearts.

A Palm Sunday Story

Once upon a time in a village near the city of Jerusalem, the village of Bethphage; a little donkey was born in the pasture.  And that donkey was called by his owner, Shorty, because he was so tiny when he was born.
  But the donkey’s mom, called him Christopher.  When Christopher became old enough to talk to his mom, he asked her, "Why does my owner call me Shorty, even now when I've grown to be a tall and strong donkey?"  Christopher's mom said, "Well once you get a name, it sometimes just sticks and people won't let you be anything else."
  Christopher asked his mom, "Then why do you call me Christopher?"  His mom said, "Well, I'm not sure but I just had this feeling that it was the right name for you."
  Christopher looked in the other pasture and he saw a beautiful big stallion prancing around.  He saw important Roman Generals ride this beautiful horse.  And Christopher thought, "I wish that someone important would ride on my back some day.  And Christopher was a little jealous of the stallion.
  But one day something exciting happened to Christopher.  Two visitors came to the farm where Christopher was kept.  They called themselves disciples of Jesus, and they said there was going to be a parade into the great city of Jerusalem.  They also said that they needed a donkey to carry their king.  Christopher's owner Farmer Jacob, said, "I've got two donkeys, that jennet over there and her colt that I call "Shorty."  If Jesus needs the donkeys, take them.  Jesus is my friend, he healed my son, and I owe him everything I have."
  So the two disciples took Christopher and his mom with them and they went to a place just in front of the sheep gate in Jerusalem.  There was a large crowd gathered who had come to Jerusalem for the Passover Holiday.  After waiting for about an hour, the crowd soon got excited.  Jesus arrived and it was time for the parade to start.  The people put some robes on Christopher to make a saddle for Jesus.  Christopher had never been ridden before, and he was nervous.  But Christopher's mom said, "Calm down, Jesus is the nicest man in the world.  You don't need to buck him off."
  Jesus Climbed up on the back of Christopher and the parade started.  The people took some branches from some palm trees and they began to wave and shout and scream, because their superstar was there.  They followed Jesus as he was riding Christopher into the city of Jerusalem and Christopher trotted proudly through the streets.  This was the happiest day of his life.  At night, he and his mom were tied up at the house of one of the disciples in Jerusalem.  Christopher's mom was proud of him and she said, "Well now I know why I named you Christopher.  "Christopher" means, "the one who carries Christ."  And today you have carried Christ on your back, so today you have lived up to your name."  Christopher was so happy he wanted hee haw with joy.  But his happiness didn't last too long.
  He looked out on the street and he saw another parade.  In the darkness he saw a tired and naked Jesus walking with soldiers.  And the soldiers were forcing him to carry this large wooden cross on his back.  He was bleeding and he was too weak to carry the cross, so at one place they forced a man named Simon to carry the cross for Jesus.  The people who were following the soldiers were laughing and making fun of Jesus.  They were saying, "you're going to die Jesus.  You were just pretending to be a king, but you don't have any power, you're going to die Jesus."
  Christopher ran to his mom and said, "If I had known that this would happen to Jesus, I would not have brought him to Jerusalem."
  Christopher's mom said, "It is a terrible, terrible thing, but we must trust God.  Jesus is the best and nicest person who ever lived and God will take care of him.
  Well, Jesus went on to die on the cross.  And he was buried in a grave.  But does the story does not end here.  Come back next week and we will tell you the end of the story.  What happened to Jesus after he died and was put in the grave?
  What was the donkey's name?  Christopher.  What does Christopher mean?  It means "The one who carries Christ."  In a way, every Christian could be called Christopher.  Because you and I are asked to carry the presence of Christ into this world by being nice and kind.  Amen.

After telling a parable to the crowd at Jericho, Jesus went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, saying, "Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' just say this, 'The Lord needs it.'" So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying the colt?" They said, "The Lord needs it." Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, saying, "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!" Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, order your disciples to stop." He answered, "I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out."

Children’s Creed
We did not make ourselves, so we believe that God the Father is the maker of the world.

Prologue to the Eucharist
Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, for to them belong the kingdom of heaven.”
All become members of a family by birth or adoption.
Baptism is the celebration of our birth into the family of God.
A family meal gathers and sustains each human family.
The Holy Eucharist is the special meal that Jesus gave to his friends to keep us together as the family of Christ.

The Lord be with you
And also with you.

Lift up your hearts
We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to God.
It is right to give God thanks and praise.

It is very good and right to give thanks, because God made us, Jesus redeemed us and the Holy Spirit dwells in our hearts.  Therefore with Angels and Archangels and all of the world that we see and don’t see, we forever sing this hymn of praise:

Our grateful praise we offer to you God, our Creator;
You have made us in your image
And you gave us many men and women of faith to help us to live by faith:
Adam and Eve, Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob and Rachael.
And then you gave us your Son, Jesus, born of Mary, nurtured by Joseph
And he called us to be sons and daughters of God.
Your Son called us to live better lives and he gave us this Holy Meal so that when we eat

And so, Father, we bring you these gifts of bread and wine. Bless and sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord.  Bless and sanctify us by your Holy Spirit so that we may love God and our neighbor.

On the night when Jesus was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."

After supper, Jesus took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, "Drink this, all of you. This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Father, we now celebrate the memorial of your Son. When we eat this holy Meal of Bread and Wine, we are telling the entire world about the life, death and resurrection of Christ and that his presence will be with us in our future.

Let this holy meal keep us together as friends who share a special relationship because of your Son Jesus Christ.  May we forever live with praise to God to whom we belong as sons and daughters.

PDA contrast: Mary and Judas

  The letters PDA have come to be the abbreviation for the "Public Display of Affection," and this has become a more sensitive issue in the wake of the "Me Too" movement and the previous habits of encroachment on private space that have been too long tolerated because of assumed access by mostly men.

  More specifically though, PDA refers to mutual public display of affection between persons who are so in love that they cannot help themselves from expressing it even in public.  And the cynical and offended public say or think, "Get a room," because of embarrassment and because the outsiders are not the lovers in love.

  We have such an event of PDA in our Gospel for today.  Mary of Bethany is unembarrassed to display her unabashed affection and devotion for Jesus.  Even though she is in the privacy of her own home, she is in the company of friends.  And she obviously hoped that her friends would understand her act of excessive devotion.

  Mary is not embarrassed but who is?  Judas Iscariot.  Judas lived in a society where men and women did not touch or speak or interact; men and women were segregated.  And this is what is interesting about the presentation of the Jesus Movement; on various occasions Jesus is in situations of violating this rule of the segregation of men and women in Jewish society.

  Mary of Bethany, is certainly transgressing the social boundaries for women of her time.  And Judas is totally embarrassed and he used financial waste as his excuse for criticism.  Remember this is the one who is going to take a bribe for 30 pieces of silver to betray Jesus.  Remember too, the infamous PDA of Judas with Jesus; a kiss of betrayal to initiate his seizure by the soldiers.

  Judas was not okay with Jesus allowing such an encroachment upon his body, particularly his feet.  Judas was implying that Jesus should have prevented Mary from even initiating such an act.

Why did Jesus permit such an act?  The feet of a person are at the lowest part of the body.  You can't get lower than the feet.  In Indian society an elder or guru might be greeted with prostrations and touching of the feet as a sign of respect.  I once did a baptism for some Indian Christians and the baptized person and his mother insisted on bowing and touching my feet.  Certainly in the American context, it seemed out of place even though one did not want to reject their way of expressing respect and gratitude.

The washing of feet was the duty of the host in the time of Jesus and if the home had servants, they would get the assignment.  Jesus himself, at the Last Supper, was not ashamed of being a foot-washing servant for his disciples.

In the narrative of John's Gospel, Jesus had just brought Lazarus back to life and it could be that Lazarus was the financial sponsor for his sibling sisters.  Mary was very grateful to Jesus for the return to life of her brother Lazarus.

  After we read this Gospel for the immediate face value of the words of this story, we further should ponder that this story was being written for the church of the community of John probably forty years after Jesus lived.  And we must ask, "What did the recounting of this story mean in the churches which gathered forty years after Jesus was gone?"

In the early church, Mary of Bethany and Judas Iscariot had become "types" of person known in the Jesus Movement.  We know from the Epistles of Paul that he had persons who had experiences of the Risen Christ and leaders in the church, yet they betrayed their callings.  There were people like Judas in the early church who were involved in the Movement but who could not identify with the experiences of devotion of those who had mystical experiences of the Risen Christ.  Mary of Bethany and Judas Iscariot represented contrasting personality of persons who were exposed to the experience of the Risen Christ, but with different responses.

As we read this for our lives today, we ourselves need to assess the places and situations where we have honestly come to express our devotion to Christ.  I think most people keep their mystical experiences of God private because they are so individual that they might be misunderstood if they are openly expressed.  We also can be worried about how someone else might characterize our experiences of devotion to God and so we are reticent to display our public devotion to God for being an intervening Higher Power at important times in our lives.

And that brings to what we are doing today in our liturgy.  Lots of people would observe our liturgy today and like Judas say, "What a waste of time and money.  Why can't you spend your money on the poor?  Why maintain a building and a property?  Why pay for clergy and everything that goes into keeping the parish going?  Why are you kneeling in church to nothing that you can see?  Why are you drinking wine and eating bread and thinking that you are participating in Christ's body?  Why are you praying to one you can't see?"

Many people forsake the liturgy because they have become embarrassed by such expression of devotion to God in public.  "I've got a private room; I can express that devotion at home."

We need to resist the cynical attitude of Judas regarding our expression of excess in our public display of affection for Christ in our "embarrassingly irrational" liturgies.

So why are we here today, expressing PDA for Christ?  Why are we being so silly?  We are being silly because we are recognizing how small we are when faced with the Plenitude of God and how that Plenitude gets expressed toward us.  And in our silliness, we are obliged to bow low before God's greatness and before Christ who made the greatness of God's love more readily knowable by us.

Let us today resist the cynicism of Judas toward worship and devotion.  Worship and devotion are something we need to do because of what God has already done for us and for for what we yet need God to do for us.

How did St. Paul characterize the person who had the mystical experience of the Risen Christ?  He said that their lives were like a fragrant offering.  As Mary of Bethany wanted to offer the very best fragrance to Jesus for his power to give new life, so we want to offer our lives as a fragrance to God in our hopes of being winsome in this world to the point of being able to cover the stench of sin and death and point to the hope of our future in God.

Go forth today and do something excessive for Christ and do something excessive for your parish too as a sign of your recognition of the Plenitude of God and the love of Christ.  Amen.
